Mrs. Sophie Kaminski, age 96 of Franklin, KY, went to her heavenly home Thursday, April 6, 2017 after a very brief respiratory illness.

Arrangements are under the direction of Gilbert Funeral Home, Franklin, KY.  Visitation will be Tuesday, April 25, 2017 at Gilbert Funeral Home from 3:00 to 6:30 pm, with a Celebration of Life and dinner at Sol Azteca, 613 South Main Street, Franklin, KY from 7 to 9 pm.  Burial will be in Parma, Ohio, at Saints Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery on April 27 at 11:00 am.

Sophie was born November 18, 1920 in Akron, Ohio to the late John and Tekla “Tillie” Dorosz.  Sophie was the first American-born of the Dorosz family.  She was preceded in death by many of her family and friends, including her sister Mary Siwik, who died at age 101.

Sophie married Walter Kaminski in 1938 and moved to Maple Heights, Ohio, where she lived until moving to Franklin, KY, in 2006.  Walter died in 1966.

As a young widow, Sophie worked as a baker in the cafeteria of Maple Heights High School, then as a maker of light fixtures at NL Electronics.  One of the fixtures she made hangs in the portico of the White House.  She retired from NL at age 62 and enjoyed traveling with friends and spending time with her family for many years.  Sophie was an amazing cook with a great gift of hospitality.  Her tremendous love and sense of humor will be remembered by all who knew her.  Above all, she thanked God every day for her many blessings.

Sophie and Walter had two children: Robert (Susan) Kaminski of Rolling Hills Estates, California, and Carole (David) Sindelar of Franklin, Kentucky.  She is also survived by grandchildren Matt (Laurie) Kaminski of Gilbert, Arizona, Sally (John) Maloney of Franklin, Lindsay Rox of Charleston, South Carolina, David (Anna) Sindelar of San Diego, CA, John Kaminski of Huntington Beach, California, and Clayton Kaminski of Bothell, Washington; ten great-grandchildren; five nieces and nephews; Jeff (Patti) Kaminski, Bell Canyon, CA; Janice Schindler of Kansas City, KS and kept in close contact with nieces Pat Romanovich of Naples, Florida; Judy Siwik of Medina, Ohio; and Judi Locke of California.

Expressions of sympathy can be made to the charities of the donors’ choice in honor of Sophie’s generous spirit.
