Charles Richard Barnes, Jr.

Charles Richard Barnes Jr., born on January 17, 1937, in Pierron, Illinois, peacefully departed this life on September 13, 2026, at his residence in Franklin, KY. A devoted family man, dedicated educator, and talented musician, Charles lived a life filled with love, passion, and creativity.

Charles proudly served his country in the U.S. Army before embarking on a long and fulfilling career as an educator with Volunteer State Community College. His dedication and enthusiasm for teaching left an indelible mark on both colleagues and countless students throughout his career.

Charles pursued his education at Cumberland University and also attended Austin Peay University, where he broadened his knowledge and developed a lifelong passion for learning, which he passed on to all who had the privilege to know him.

A man of many talents, Charles was also an accomplished musician, known for his skills on the fiddle and bass. His voice was as remarkable as his instrumental talent. His passion for building airplanes, creating models, and riding motorcycles reflected his adventurous spirit and thirst for challenge. Ever the handyman, he was always working on a new project and even found time to write books and songs, leaving a legacy of creativity and ingenuity.

Charles is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Sandy Barnes; his son, B.J. Barnes, and daughter-in-law, Tonya, of Portland, TN; his cherished granddaughters, Lauren Cook and her husband Justin, and Hannah Barnes, both of Portland, TN; and his much-adored great-grandchildren, Charlie Cook and Lacie Cook. He also leaves behind his sister, Sally Sparks, and her husband George, of Missouri, as well as several nieces and nephews. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Richard Barnes, Sr., and Clara (Weidner) Barnes; first wife, Norma Mete Barnes; daughter, Kim McCarty; son, Bradley Barnes; and his siblings, Don Barnes, Gerald Barnes, and Deanna Gansmann.

In accordance with Charlie's wishes, he will be cremated. There will be a Celebration of Life Service Visitation on Saturday, October 3, 2026 at White House General Baptist Church, 4012 31W in Cottontown, TN from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
